Your Environment Is Feeding You Too

For a long time, I thought wellness was mostly about food.
What you eat.
What you avoid.
How clean your diet is.
And while food absolutely matters, I realized something deeper while living in Peru.
The food there was incredible.
Real strawberries that actually tasted like strawberries. Blueberries with richness and depth instead of tasting like water. Fresh fruit everywhere. Access to nourishment felt easier there than in many places I’ve lived.
But even with all of that, my nervous system was struggling.
I lived in Lima, close to the ocean, yet surrounded by constant noise. Horn honking all day. Exhaust pollution. Overstimulation. Movement that never really stopped.
And I started noticing something important:
My body was reacting to the environment just as much as it was reacting to food.
My anxiety increased.
I felt constantly on edge.
My nervous system stayed activated.
Honestly, I think the quality of the food helped support me through that season. Without it, I probably would have felt even worse.
That experience changed how I understood wellness.
Because your environment feeds you too.
The pace around you feeds you.
The noise feeds you.
The energy feeds you.
The stress feeds you.
The sunlight feeds you.
The people feed you.
The silence feeds you.
Every environment is either helping regulate your nervous system or overwhelming it.
I notice this every time I go back to the United States.
My body feels heavy there.
Inflamed.
Anxious.
I can feel the difference almost immediately, which is why I can never stay long. My body simply doesn’t tolerate certain environments anymore.
And then I came to Vietnam.
Specifically, Hoi An.
The difference was immediate.
You’re surrounded by water here. The ocean. The river. Rice fields stretching for miles. The pace is slower. The traffic isn’t overwhelming. There’s movement, but it doesn’t feel aggressive.
For the first time in a very long time, I felt my body exhale.
That’s the best way I can describe it.
Exhale.
And once the nervous system starts feeling safe, the body begins responding differently too.
My sleep improved.
My cravings settled down.
My digestion shifted.
The bloating and inflammation started reducing.
My emotional regulation became more manageable.
But the biggest shift?
My creativity exploded.
I could feel my body opening back up.
And I’m still healing. I’ve only been here a few months. But slowly and steadily, I can see the difference in myself.
That’s why I believe environment is often overlooked in wellness conversations.
People focus only on food while staying in environments that constantly dysregulate their bodies.
But your environment becomes your reality.
Your body absorbs everything around it.
That’s why certain things now feel non-negotiable for me:
walking, sunlight, nature, ocean air, silence, slower living, space, exotic fruits, and environments where my nervous system doesn’t have to stay in survival mode.
I also had to accept something difficult:
My body rejects environments my mind once tried to tolerate.
Peru taught me that clearly.
Beautiful place. Beautiful people. Incredible food.
But cities overwhelm me.
And instead of forcing myself to adapt to environments that dysregulate me, I started listening to what my body was trying to say.
That changed everything.
Because wellness is not just about what you consume.
It’s also about where you exist.
